Mullin-less McMurry falls to Wildcats in finale, 55-13

PINEVILLE, La. – Louisiana College shook off a sluggish first quarter and took advantage of five McMurry turnovers on the way to a 55-13 victory in the 2009 season finale at Wildcat Field Saturday afternoon.

Landry Gunter, filling in for the ill Jake Mullin, tossed five interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown and two more led to Wildcat scores. McMurry's Will Morris picked off the second pass of the ball game from LC's Ben McLaughlin to set up a 5-play 48-yard touchdown drive capped by Chantz Purvis' 1-yard touchdown run. McMurry led 7-0 and kept the Wildcats from scoring in the first quarter.

However, the floodgates opened when the Wildcats scored 52 unanswered points to coast to 7-3 overall and 7-2 in the American Southwest Conference. Ben McLaughlin tossed two touchdown passes and Detrick James rushed for two scores to help lead LC.

McMurry opened the year with an 0-4 start, responded by winning its next four games, but dropped the final two decisions of the year to fall to 4-6 overall and 4-4 in league play. Regardless, the season was a breath of fresh air after a winless 2008 and a 2-8 record in 2007.

Gunter finished the game 24 of 45 for 216 yards passing along with five picks. The redshirt freshman, however, did throw his first collegiate touchdown pass to R.J. Long in the fourth quarter.
