SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The McMurry War Hawks showed relentless fight on the road Saturday night, unleashing a fierce fourth-quarter comeback bid before falling 31-17 to No. 13-ranked Trinity University at Trinity Stadium. Facing a steep second-half deficit against one of the top programs in the country, McMurry dominated the final frame with 14 unanswered points and got inside the Trinity 10-yard line as time expired.
The War Hawks set the tone immediately by capitalizing on a defensive turnover on the game's opening series. On the host Tigers' second snap from scrimmage, defensive back
Eric Tonche hauled in an interception deflected by
Noah Hatcher and returned it to the Trinity 34-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-13 moments later, quarterback
Jess Hoel stood tall in the pocket and launched a 32-yard strike down the sideline to
Thomas Chandler to set up first-and-goal.
Jax Rodriguez capped the eight-play drive by drilling a 22-yard field goal, giving McMurry an early 3-0 lead. The War Hawk defense maintained that edge throughout the opening frame, highlighted by
Bryce Neves dropping the quarterback for a nine-yard sack and
Malachi Jerome breaking loose for a 36-yard punt return.
Trinity found its rhythm in the second quarter, taking advantage of short field position to notch two rushing scores and a 35-yard field goal as the clock ran out in the half to lead 17-3 at the intermission. The War Hawks threatened to cut into the deficit late in the second period when
Leroy Rodriguez broke free for a 10-yard run, and Hoel scrambled for nine yards, but a fumble halted the drive in host territory with nine seconds remaining.
The hosts stretched their advantage in the third frame behind a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and an extended scoring drive, pushing the deficit to 31-3. McMurry refused to yield. Behind quarterback
Carson Roper, who entered the contest and provided an immediate spark, the War Hawk offense ignited late in the third quarter on a methodical 9-play, 91-yard scoring march. Roper connected with
Kason O'Shields and
Xavier Williams before lofting a 31-yard completion to Chandler to set up first-and-goal at the three-yard line. Roper called his own number on the ensuing snap, surging across the goal line for a three-yard touchdown run. Rodriguez added the PAT, cutting the score to 31-10 early in the fourth quarter.
Special teams and defense provided another surge of momentum midway through the fourth. When Trinity lined up for a 32-yard field goal to ice the game,
Elijah Windham burst through the line of scrimmage and blocked the attempt, with
Jackson Preng recovering the loose ball at the McMurry 14-yard line. Roper and the offense went right back to work, orchestrating a marathon 14-play, 86-yard drive. Roper scrambled for 23 yards, delivered a 16-yard strike to
Corey Layne, and found Chandler for two crucial catches before firing a five-yard touchdown strike to O'Shields. Rodriguez split the uprights on the extra point to pull McMurry within 31-17 with 3:53 remaining.
The War Hawk defense forced a quick punt on the next possession, anchored by a crucial tackle for loss from Neves and
Dylan Gass to give McMurry the ball back with 1:43 remaining. Roper pushed the offense 71 yards in the dying seconds, highlighted by a 37-yard bomb to
Bryson Perez down to the Trinity eight-yard line as time ran out.
Roper directed the second-half rally, finishing 15-of-24 passing for 184 yards and a touchdown while adding 40 rushing yards and a score on 10 carries. Chandler eclipsed the century mark through the air, hauling in seven receptions for 101 yards. Defensively,
Cooper Barnard and Neves paced the War Hawks with nine total tackles apiece, with Neves adding 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Next week, the War Hawks host Huntingdon College at 1:00 p.m. for their first home game of the season.
