Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - The McMurry War Hawks launched their season in resilient fashion Saturday night, outlasting a late charge by  Southwestern University 36-26 at Birkelbach Field. Powered by explosive plays across all three areas, including a 97-yard kickoff return and a suffocating front seven that generated 13 tackles for loss, McMurry controlled the tempo to start the year 1-0.

Following a scoreless first quarter highlighted by defensive back Tre Sharp snatching a red-zone interception out of the air and returning it 30 yards, the War Hawks broke the deadlock in the second frame. Facing a fourth-and-15, quarterback Carson Roper delivered under pressure, finding Xavier Williams on a 38-yard touchdown strike. Jax Rodriguez tacked on the extra point to give McMurry a 7-0 lead. After Southwestern answered with a touchdown of their own, Roper went right back to work on an 85-yard scoring march. Roper connected with Kason O'Shields on a 51-yard bomb down to the red zone before calling his own number on a nine-yard touchdown scamper to send the War Hawks into the locker room ahead 13-7.

The third quarter featured an explosion of big plays. After the Pirates converted a field goal to cut the deficit to 13-10, Malachi Jerome provided an instant lightning bolt, fielding the ensuing kickoff at his own three-yard line and dashing 97 yards down the sideline for a breathtaking touchdown. McMurry's defense quickly forced a three-and-out, and quarterback Jess Hoel capitalized by engineering an eight-play, 65-yard drive. Hoel scrambled for 14 yards to convert a key third down and later dropped a dime to Thomas Chandler for a 28-yard touchdown connection. Rodriguez's extra point extended the advantage to 26-10. Southwestern managed to trim the deficit to 26-16 late in the quarter on a miscue in the punt return game, but the War Hawks remained firmly in front.

McMurry widened the gap early in the fourth quarter when Nyles Hullaby punched in a two-yard touchdown plunge to cap off a five-play drive, giving the War Hawks a comfortable 33-16 cushion. Defensive back Cole Riha kept momentum rolling on the next series, snagging McMurry's second interception of the night and returning it 17 yards. Southwestern battled back with a touchdown pass and a 35-yard field goal to close within seven at 33-26 with four minutes remaining. With the pressure on, the War Hawk defense delivered the knockout blow, shutting down Southwestern on fourth down at the Pirates' 22-yard line with under two minutes left. Rodriguez then stepped up and iced the victory with a clutch 36-yard field goal with just 53 seconds on the clock, finalizing the 36-26 triumph.

Bryce Neves anchored a dominant defensive performance with a game-high 12 tackles, including 4.0 tackles for loss. Cooper Barnard contributed nine stops and two tackles for loss, while Aamanni Strahan recorded 1.5 sacks as the War Hawk defense held Southwestern to just 42 rushing yards on 31 attempts. Offensively, Roper threw for 147 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another score, O'Shields hauled in 98 receiving yards, and Chandler registered six receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Next week, the War Hawks travel to San Antonio to face off against #14 Trinity University at 6:00 p.m. next Saturday.
