ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry War Hawks put on an electrifying, record-setting game at Wilford Moore Stadium, dismantling the Westgate Christian Ravens 93-20. McMurry lit up the scoreboard in every phase, totaling 647 yards of offense and setting a new program record with 13 total touchdowns. The 93-point explosion marks the program's highest-scoring output since hanging 68 points on Texas Lutheran in 1999.
The War Hawks wasted no time asserting control in the opening quarter. After the defense forced a quick three-and-out on the game's opening possession,
Carson Roper sparked the offense on a three-play, 66-yard drive, capping it with a 34-yard touchdown pass to
Kason O'Shields.
Jax Rodriguez converted the extra point, giving McMurry an immediate 7-0 lead. Minutes later, the defense delivered a seismic play of its own when
Cooper Barnard jumped a route, hauled in an interception at the McMurry 41-yard line, and raced 59 yards to the house for a touchdown. Roper closed out the opening quarter's scoring by finishing a five-play, 46-yard march with a four-yard touchdown run, giving McMurry a 21-0 lead going into the second frame.
McMurry kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter, cycling talent under center seamlessly. Early in the frame, defensive end
Davin Hopkins blew up a fourth-down try with a 17-yard sack, handing possession back to the offense.
Jess Hoel took over at quarterback, moved the chains on fourth down, then floated a 22-yard touchdown pass to O'Shields for the receiver's second score of the half. Following a Ravens rushing score, Hoel engineered another touchdown march, highlighted by a 26-yard scamper from
Kaleb Martinez and punctuated by Hoel's own two-yard touchdown dive.
Owen Painter added the PAT to make it 35-6. With less than a minute left before the intermission,
Chris Teten entered at quarterback and struck instantly, hitting
Zay Alexander on a 63-yard touchdown bomb. Despite a Ravens kickoff return touchdown moments later, the War Hawks entered halftime with a commanding 42-14 cushion.
McMurry opened the second half with an emphatic exclamation point. On the first play from scrimmage, Roper unleashed a deep pass to
Xavier Williams, who broke free for a 61-yard touchdown reception. Painter's extra point extended the margin to 49-14. After the defense forced another punt, Hoel connected with
Trystin Hayes-Rimes on a 50-yard strike, setting up a 20-yard field goal by Rodriguez. Following a 27-yard punt return by
Bryson Perez, Teten scrambled in for a five-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 59-14. After the Ravens answered with a touchdown, quarterback
Brayden Loyd took the reins, dialing up 30- and 36-yard completions before
Brian Grissom broke free for a 12-yard touchdown run to make it 66-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
The War Hawks' relentless execution carried right through the final frame to secure their spot in the record books. On the first play of the fourth quarter,
Grayson Hunkapiller forced and recovered a fumble at the Ravens' 29-yard line. Loyd capitalized on the very next snap, connecting with
Marcus Maple for a 29-yard touchdown strike. After another fourth-down stop, Teten led a 67-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Alexander. On the ensuing Ravens drive,
John Newton forced a fumble, scooped up the loose ball, and returned it 38 yards for McMurry's second defensive touchdown of the day.
Israel Massouema soon stopped another Ravens fourth-down attempt with a seven-yard sack, setting up Grissom for an 18-yard touchdown run to cap off the historic 93-20 win and mark the team's 13th trip to the end zone.
Next week, the War Hawks host a conference game against Mary Hardin-Baylor on October 24th at Wilford Moore Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
