KISSIMMEE, Fla. – In its final game of the NCCAA national tournament, the McMurry University (11-13) men's soccer team fell, 3-1, in the fifth place contest to Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams went back-and-forth for most of the first half, with neither team being able to garner the advantage, until
Ian McCarthy notched the first goal of the contest for the War Hawks. McCarthy took a great pass from Antonie Freitas, Jr. and finished the play for his first goal of the season to give McMurry the 1-0 lead in the 38
th minute.
Just five minutes later, with time running out in the first half, the Redhawks notched the equalizer off the foot of Donavan Wilson in the 44
th minute. The teams would go into the half tied, 1-1.
In the second frame, McMurry had multiple chances to score, but it was Roberts Wesleyan who took the 2-1 advantage when Wilson scored his second of the contest in the 60
th minute.
The Redhawks would then add an insurance goal in the 84
th minute off the foot of Brandon Bianchi to go up, 3-1. The game would end by the same score.
With the loss, the War Hawks finished the season with an 11-13 record. Their 11 wins marked the most for the program since winning 12 matches in 2004.
