McMurry vs. Hardin-Simmons
On October 18, 2018, McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University came together and decided to make Abilene's "Crosstown Showdown" more than just a rivalry. Both athletics departments announced an annual perpetual award, which showcases meetings between the intercollegiate teams of both institutions each season. At the end of the year, the winner will receive The Dyess Trophy, named in honor of Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.
With 23 points up for grabs, The Dyess Trophy scoring includes head-to-head conference games in the following sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis and volleyball. The winner collects one point. Additionally, the highest finisher at the American Southwest Conference Championships between the two in the sports of cross country, golf and track and field will earn a point. The baseball and softball programs face off three times each, while men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball each play twice in a home-and-home. In case of a tie, whichever school possesses the Trophy the previous year would retain it.
As an additional way to pay tribute to the men and women of Dyess AFB, all personnel will be admitted to any HSU-McM rivalry game free of charge by simply presenting their military identification at the gate.
The 2018-19 season marked the inaugural year of the trophy, which Hardin-Simmons won 15-8.
