ABILENE, Texas – Despite
James Ness scoring his sixth goal of the season, the McMurry University men's soccer team fell, 2-1, to the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University on Saturday afternoon.
St. Edward's struck the first blow in the 13
th minute when Kyly Pujats connected with the net from 10-yards out to give SEU the 1-0 lead. Not to be out done, the War Hawks came storming back just three minutes later when Ness gathered a shot off the post from
Ryan Prince to beat the keeper and tie the game at 1-1. With McMurry playing down a man after the 20
th minute, SEU capitalized on the man-advantage when Anderson McDaniel beat keeper
Neil O'Sullivan to open the 2-1 lead.
In the second half of play, things began to get more physical as four cautions were handed out in the frame. However, neither team was able to score, and the Hilltoppers took the game 2-1.
Offensively, McMurry was led by Ness who gathered his sixth goal of the season, giving him 12 points in his first year as a War Hawk. O'Sullivan led the defense by making four saves on the day, with two coming at vital stages in the second-half.
McMurry will play their final home game of the season on Monday, October 22 when they host Texas-Permian Basin. The contest at Edwards Field is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
