SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
James Ness scored in his second consecutive contest, and
Juan Isacura scored his first goal of the season as the McMurry University men's soccer team defeated the St. Mary's Rattlers 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The War Hawks struck quickly in the first half as Ness took advantage of a defensive lapse when they failed to clear the ball. Ness took the deflected and buried the ball in the back of the net to give McMurry a 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later Isacura took a deflection off of the Rattlers goalie and placed the ball in the open net to extend the lead to 2-0. St. Mary's Armando
Macias cut the lead to 2-1 when he scored in the 36
th minute and the teams would go into the half by the same score.
Despite being outshot 9-2 in the half, the War Hawks made the most of their opportunities, shooting 100% in the half on their way to the 2-1 lead.
In the second half, keeper
Neil O'Sullivan slammed the door shut on St. Mary's as they took 11-shots but could not find the net. O'Sullivan made five saves in the half to preserve the lead for the War Hawks and capture their fourth win of the season.
Offensively, the War Hawks were led by Ness' goal which gave him the team lead in goals on the year with four. Isacura's goal was his first in a War Hawks uniform and gave him two points on the season.
McMurry will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International. The game is slated to begin immediately after the women's contest, which begins at 12 p.m.
