ABILENE, Texas – In a match that included 33 fouls, five yellow cards, and an act of sportsmanship by the Wayland Baptist University head coach Shiloh Posey, which took a goal away from his own team, the Pioneers were still able to pull out a 2-1 victory over McMurry University at Edwards Field Friday afternoon.

With the score 1-1, WBU's John Piperis scored on a deflection in the 44th minute to put the Pioneers up 2-1. But, at halftime Posey informed the officials and McMurry head coach Paul Tate that Piperis was not on their official roster that he had turned in prior to the game. After deliberation and a brief look in the rulebook, the referees negated the goal and returned the score to a 1-1 tie at intermission.

The first goal of the match came in the 32nd minute of the match when WBU's Gerardo Espinoza went airborne and headed in a goal on a free kick to give the Pioneers and early 1-0 advantage.

McMurry fought back with 15 shots in the first half, and finally broke the seal for the season when Tyler Tarango volleyed a corner kick by Bobby Wagner in the 42nd minute past goalie David Metcalfe for the first McMurry goal of the season.

Despite the nixed goal, it didn't take long for the Pioneers to strike again as Cody McClary scored in the 46th minute when he chipped a free kick over the outstretched arms of the McMurry goalie Matt Mouer to seal the victory for WBU.

McMurry out shot WBU 21-11 and had two more shots on goal then the Pioneers, but McMurry still fell short of a victory. Mouer recorded four saves in the loss and McMurry moved to 0-2 on the season while WBU improved to 2-0.

McMurry hits the road Monday to play Puget Sound University from Newberg, Ore. at Noon on the campus of UT-Dallas in Richardson.
