ABILENE, Texas – Senior
Kelby Tidwell highlighted the second day of the 2022 American Southwest Conference Championships for McMurry University Track & Field, breaking the ASC heptathlon record with 4,067 points Friday.
Tidwell becomes McMurry's fourth champion of the meet through 15 scored events, joining
Janeth Chacon,
Reagan Owen and
Jaalah Puryear with their wins yesterday.
In the team standings, the War Hawks lead both the men's and women's sides. Through seven women's events, McMurry has 121 points, followed by Hardin-Simmons with 78. Meanwhile, the men own a 60 point lead through eight events at 111 points. HSU is in second at 51, followed by LeTourneau at 47.
DAY 2 RESULTS (PDF)
Heptathlon Highlights (Day 2):
- Tidwell bested four other athletes with her score that now ranks 21st nationally. She beat the ASC meet record by over 300 points. She won every event on Day 2 and finished with five first place finishes, one silver and one bronze. She won the shot put yesterday (9.96m) and then the 200 (26.36), long jump (5.31m), javelin (30.03m) and the 800 (2:44.76) today.
- Najwa Campbell finished third behind LeTourneau's Kaitlyn Reed with 3184 points, trailing Reed at 3210. Campbell placed second in the 200 behind Tidwell at 27.74.
- Losuria Webb-Barber and Bethany Wood finished fourth and fifth, respectively, scoring a combined nine points. Webb-Barber had a silver finish in the long jump at 4.90m, while Woof placed second in the javelin at 28.92m.
Decathlon Highlights (Day 2):
- All five of McMurry athletes scored in the 11-man decathlon, led by freshman Shepherd Miller with 5,731 points to place second overall. He and decathlon champion Erik Moore broke the ASC meet record Friday, with Moore winning at 6,177 points. Miller tied Moore in the pole vault for first place at 3.97m. He also finished second in the javelin at 45.22m.
- Rylan Rogers earned bronze at 5,469 points, moving up one spot from yesterday to earn an additional point. Rogers also had a 3.97m clearance in the pole vault to tie the leaders, while also winning the discus at 33.29m.
- Kade Kimmel remained in fifth after the final event with 4,568 points, moving up two spots by the fifth event. After winning the 400 meter run yesterday, he started Friday with a second place hurdles finish.
- Senior Cahlyl Rossin was in ninth on the first day, but leaped up to sixth to score three points on the final day. His highlights included a trio of sixth place finishes in the 110 hurdles, pole vault and 1500.
- Cody McWilliams was not far behind in seventh, scoring with 4226 points. His time of 5:31.52 was good enough for second place in the 1500 to end it.
Field Highlights:
- Sophomore Vern Angton III earned a second-team all-conference spot with a silver in the men's discus, launching a mark of 42.81 meters.
- The pole vault was also a successful event for McMurry, as the team came away with 20 points. Jayden Gonzales finished with an exciting personal record of 4.55m to earn second place in the event. He was followed by Miller and Rogers in third and fourth with dual marks of 4.35m. Luis Holguin scored a point with his mark of 3.90m.
- Tidwell and Taya Bridges both scored in the women's long jump. Tidwell, coming off her heptathlon showing, finished third at 5.28m. Bridges scored an eighth place finish at 4.95m.
- Jermond Lovely scored in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.97m to place seventh.
- In the women's shot put, McMurry had three scorers. Elizabeth Jordan and Elizabeth Cunningham led the way with fifth and sixth place finishes at 11.38m and 10.98m, respectively. Corbin Stulir snuck into eighth place at 10.86m.

The War Hawks will wrap up the ASC Championships tomorrow, the triple jump at 9 a.m. Field events conclude at 12:30 p.m. The running finals take place at 2 p.m. Awards are scheduled for around 6:30 p.m. as McMurry looks for the double repeat.
