RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry Baseball Head Coach
John Byington and his staff highlighted the 2022 American Southwest Conference postseason awards for the War Hawks on Monday, winning the ASC Co-Coaching Staff of the Year award.
Byington is a first-time winner as head coach, though he was on staff for three other Coaching Staff of the Year awards in 2001, 2004 and 2008 under Coach Lee Driggers. Byington was assisted by former standout player
Josh Lee, fifth-year assistant
Boardman Adams, program mainstay and volunteer assistant
Dirk Saltzgaber and recent alum
Mike Gonzales.
Additionally, eight players were honored by the league with postseason honors. The teams are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Senior
Reed Hodges headlined the group as he was named the league's top catcher with first team honors. Hodges reached base in all 34 appearances he made and ended the year with a 26-game hitting streak. He hit .414 with 53 hits, seven doubles, three triples and a homer for 20 RBI and 41 runs scored. Hodges had an exact .500 on-base percentage figure and did not ground into a double play all season in 128 at-bats. Hodges also boasted a strong .984 fielding percentage and caught nine runners stealing.
The only hitter with a better average than Hodges was fellow senior
Nick Hamel. Hamel was named to the all-conference second-team with a league-best .426 average. He was second in the league with 60 hits and led the team in doubles (16), RBI (38), total bases (80), slugging (.567), OBP (.503), walks (22) and OPS (1.070).
On the mound, Hamel recorded six saves and became the school's all-time career saves leader. He completed 25.1 innings with 14 appearances and two starts. He finished with 10 walks to 27 strikeouts.
Hamel was one of three players conference-wide to earn his third-career honor, joining ASC Player of the Year Malek Bolin from Mary Hardin-Baylor and Jorge Marquez from Sul Ross State.
Senior pitcher
Derek Hostas became a two-time honoree by landing third team honors. The ace pitched a team-high 75.1 innings and owned a 6-4 record and 4.42 ERA. He finished with three complete games and two ASC Pitcher of the Week nominations for wins over Ozarks and No. 5 UT Dallas – the eventual league champions. He added 78 strikeouts to lead the team.
Hostas was joined on the third team by designated hitter
Josh Dyer. The junior college transfer jolted the lineup with a .313 batting average in 29 starts and a team-high seven homers. He also added nine doubles, a triple, 25 runs scored and 28 RBI. Dyer also ranked second on the team with nine stolen bases.
Four players earned honorable mentions from the conference – all four of which are from different classes. Senior
Marty Carnahan and junior
Travis Beauchamp represented the upperclassmen as pitcher, while shortstop
Blake Beach and outfielder
Koy Carpenter joined them.
Carnahan served as the team's "Saturday starter" with 10 starts and 52.2 inning pitched. His deceiving 7.52 ERA translated to a 4-1 record for the War Hawks, as he kept the team alive in late-game situations. He went at least 5.0 innings in eight of his 10 starts, one of which included a career-high 10 strikeouts against Howard Payne. He finished with 56 strikeouts on the season.
Beauchamp was the team's go-to reliever this season with 15 appearances and 33.2 innings pitched – fourth most on the team. He finished with three saves and a 1-1 record to go with a 5.08 ERA. On March 30, Beauchamp was named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week after recording nine straight outs for his first career save against No. 5 UT Dallas.
Beach had a strong sophomore campaign with a .302 batting average in 39 starts and a team-high 159 at-bats. Beach many times set the table from the leadoff spot, resulting in a team-high 45 runs scored. He also led the team in triples with five, sac flies with four and stolen bases with 13. He added five doubles and three home runs, to boot.
Carpenter was the lone freshman to earn postseason honors for McMurry, batting .273 on the season with 30 starts in center field. He scored 20 runs and drove home 14 with two doubles. Carpenter was also a threat on the bases and with the glove, stealing seven bags and posting a .969 fielding percentage while making some highlight-reel catches in the outfield.
