Champions! McMurry Track & Field sweeps conference titles in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. – McMurry University Track & Field is back where it belongs – at the top.

Both the men's and women's programs were crowned American Southwest Conference Champions on Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi. McMurry has now won three of the last four championships on both sides, with the men going back-to-back this year and the women winning their first since 2018.

The men now have 19 conference titles all-time and 17 since 1999. The women won their 13th ASC Championship on Saturday.

The men finished atop the standings with 215.5 points in 21 scored events, followed by Hardin-Simmons (174.5), LeTourneau (98), Concordia Texas (97), East Texas Baptist (88), Belhaven (76), UT Dallas (58) and Ozarks (4). The War Hawks led the whole way, holding off HSU on the final day and sealing the deal in the final running events.

Meanwhile, the McMurry women also led wire-to-wire and won with 232 points. HSU finished second with 207 points, followed by ETBU (114), LeTourneau (105), Concordia Texas (75), Belhaven (38) and UT Dallas (19).

Perhaps the top event performance came from sophomore Jayden Sloan in the men's 400 meter dash, as he broke the ASC Championship meet record with a winning time of 47.20. The previous record was 47.88.

Junior Kelby Tidwell was the Most Valuable Performer in the meet, scoring 35 points over seven events with one win in the pole vault and four podium finishes.

Sophomore Ellie Ryan was the second-highest scorer in the meet with 30 points, including a win in the hammer and two silvers. Freshman Janeth Chacon tied for the third-highest total score with 25 points, including golds in the 5K and 10K.

Freshman Dazhaun Walton was the men's meet MVP with 24 total points, edging Ravon Davis Conway from Concordia Texas and Lorien Nightingale from LeTourneau with 23 each. Walton took gold in the men's 200 and both relay, while also scoring in the men's 100 and men's high jump.

The War Hawks had 10 individual conference championships and won both the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

The women had six individual championships, two of which came from Janeth Chacon. Outside of the relay wins, the men had four winners – two on the track, one in the pole vault and one in the hammer. McMurry swept the pole vault and hammer events on both sides, while sweeping the podium in the men's hammer.
