McMurry University head track and field coach Cody Knight made a big splash in Summer 2019, announcing the hire of six-time All-American and McMurry alumnus Cody Brotherton as the assistant coach in charge of throws.
A five-time NCAA Division III national champion in the shot put, Brotherton brings a wealth of knowledge and success to the War Hawks' track and field program.
In addition to being a six-time All-American and having well-documented success pushing weights before graduating in 2005, Brotherton was also a four-time national qualifier in the discus. The Abilene native won nine conference titles, including four in discus, four in shot put and one in the hammer throw.
In the classroom, Brotherton was a two-time Academic All-American.
As a coach, Brotherton helped three throwers earn American Southwest Conference championships in 2021, including a sweep of the hammer throws by Ellie Ryan and Sutton Welch and a women's discus win by Margo Mendoza. Brotherton also helped the War Hawks score 10 podium finishes in throwing events en route to a pair of ASC Championship wins as a team. In 2022, he followed that success with another sweep of the hammer throws by freshmen Jaalah Puryear and Reagan Owen. Ryan also won the women's discus, marking her second conference title while coached by Brotherton.
Brotherton is an ACE certified personal trainer, Precision Nutrition Level 1 Nutrition coach and is a certified USTFA Strength and Conditioning Coach.Â
In addition to coaching at McMurry, Brotherton is a former worship pastor at FBC Clyde in Clyde, Texas. He now holds a similar role as the worship leader at Wylie Methodist Church.
Brotherton is married to the former Shelly Perkins, also a McMurry alum. The couple has two children, Hunter and Harper. Â
