Box Score ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Tennis earns its second win of the season with a close 5-4 victory over LeTourneau Friday afternoon.
LeTourneau jumped out to a 2-1 lead after claiming two doubles matchups. The War Hawks battled back in singles play to push past the YellowJackets for the win.
"The guys found themselves behind 3-4 and had to fight back under pressure," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "In the stretch, Causer and Joseph held strong and nearly came off the court at the same time to seal the victory for us. I was extremely proud of their fight and determination to capture those last two points for the team."
Doubles tandem,
Carlos Martinez and
Chase Daniell, continued their win streak with an 8-5 No. 1 doubles win over LETU's Julian Lee and Patrick Baney.
Heading into singles play, the War Hawks trailed 1-2.
Martinez powered past Lee in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Chase Daniell fought through a tough match against Nathan Schmidt, earning the first set, 7-5, followed by a 6-4 second set.
Chris Causer evened the score up with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win in No. 6 singles.
Sophomore
Reid Smith found himself in a three-set bout with YellowJacket senior Rodrigo Vazquez Chairez but would ultimately fall to Chairez, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.
With the final match being the deciding factor, senior
Joseph Diaz's racket would determine the outcome. Diaz cruised through the first set, winning 6-1 over LETU's Gavin Meyer. In Meyer's attempt to even the playing field once more, Meyers pushed the second set to 5-all before Diaz would ultimately produce a clutch 7-5 second set win and the McMurry victory.
The War Hawks are now 2-2 on the season.
McMurry will quickly return to action as they will host East Texas Baptist at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center, Saturday Feb. 27. First serve is set for 11 A.M.
