RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University Men's Tennis was picked fourth in the American Southwest Conference West Division, in a poll by the league's head coaches.
UT Dallas was predicted to win the West, receiving 11 of 13 first-place votes. Hardin Simmons University was tabbed second, followed closely by Concordia Texas, who also received a first-place vote. University of Mary Hardin-Baylor claimed the final first-place vote, as McMurry and the Crusaders tied for fourth with 54 points. Rounding out the division were Howard Payne University and Sul Ross State University.
In the East Division, East Texas Baptist received 12 of 13 first-place votes to claim the top spot with UT Tyler ineligible. LeTourneau University was picked second with the last first-place vote, followed by Belhaven University in third. University of the Ozarks and Louisiana College rounded out the top five.
McMurry had two named to the Watch List, as well, in junior Carlos Martinez and freshman Chase Daniell.
Martinez was named the ASC West Division Player of the Year last season after going 6-0 at both number one singles and doubles. He was 15-4, overall, at number one singles, along with an 11-9 mark in doubles. Additionally, Martinez was first team All-ASC and All-ASC West.
Daniell is a freshman from Wills Point, Texas. As a senior, he was the state champion in doubles and was a semifinalist in singles in 2016 and 2017. He helped Wills Point reach the state semifinals in 2014 and 2017, as well.
The War Hawks get their 2019 season underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. when they face East Division favorite East Texas Baptist at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks will host Trinity University on Sunday at 9 a.m., as well.
