KEENE, Texas - McMurry University women's soccer got the
Charles Nobles coaching era off on the right foot, registering a 6-0 victory on the road over Southwestern Adventist University for its first-year head coach. The War Hawks (1-0) led 2-0 at halftime and exploded for four second-half tallies versus the Knights (0-1).
After a sluggish start – easily attributed to 22 new roster players (eight of whom were in the starting line-up) – McM still managed to control all aspects of the match. The War Hawks out-shot SAU by a 33-1 margin.
Junior transfer
Jolyn Noble had the honor of putting McM's first score of the year on the board in the 20
th minute off a pass from freshman
Maddy Smith. Just before the end of the half, returning junior
Julissa Alvarez made it 2-0 with her first goal of 2017, with the assists going to freshman
Emily Fisher.
Freshman
Angelica Navarro would then put an exclamation point on the match with back-to-back goals just four minutes apart. The first – in the 50
th minute – was assisted by returning junior
Cristen Lumbreras, while the second – coming in the 54
th minute – was from Navarro's high school teammate Fisher.
Lumbreras then got into the act herself, notching a goal in the 75
th minute of action. The assist was by
Peyton Wood. In the 80
th minute, freshman
Wren Arevalo picked up her first collegiate goal as well, with
Julia Renfrow assisting.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Gregory played the first half in the McMurry nets, with newcomers
Ashley Ray and
Cindy Villasana splitting time the second hald, in earning the combined shutout.
