ABILENE, Texas - Saturday will be the annual "Senior Day" game for McMurry University, as it welcomes Louisiana College to Wilford Moore Stadium (2 p.m. kickoff). The War Hawks enter the day 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Wildcats are 4-4 and also 1-3 in the ASC.
The quartet of seniors playing their final game on the turf of Wilford Moore Stadium includes:
Decorian Johnson,
Corey Lopez,
Jake Hinson and
J.R. Arroyo.
This is the 16th meeting between these teams, with LC holding a 10-5 advantage. The teams first met in 1962 and again in 1963, and continuously from 2000-11 (with McM winning in 2011, 49-28, when the 'Cats were ranked No. 20 in the nation). The teams renewed the series last year in Pineville, won by Louisiana College, 28-15, in soggy conditions.
The Wildcats are coming off of a tough home loss to No. 18-ranked East Texas Baptist University, 64-62, in a true donnybrook! LC gave the Tigers all they could handle, with a potential game-tying two-point conversion failing with just 15 seconds left in the game. The two teams combined for 1,215 yards of total offense (713 for ETBU). The Wildcats also have a loss to No. 10 Hardin--Simmons (42-21).
Besides ETBU (which topped McM, 67-31), the two teams have several other common foes, with like results. Both clubs defeated Texas College, Howard Payne and Belhaven. They each also lost to Sul Ross State.
McMurry is coming off of a 41-6 victory a HPU, in which the War Hawks' defense once again shone through. McM turned in two more defensive scores in the game, giving it a total of eight defensive touchdowns in 2016.
Jordan Washington had a 93-yard interception return and lineman
Darius Brooks had a school-record 80-yard fumble recovery and return.
(In all of NCAA football, only the University of Alabama has more defensive scores - with nine - than do the War Hawks).
For Washington, it marked the third-consecutive game in which he has had an interception return for a score, setting the ASC season record for interception return yards in a season (285) and returns for touchdowns (3). He earned the ASC's defensive co-Player of the Week for his efforts.
On the year, McM has 22 takeaways in all.
Freshman quarterback
B.J. Ross leads the McM team in both rushing (85 carries/378 yards/5 TD) and passing (82-150/934 yards/6 TD).
Kelvaughn Hayes (239 yards) and
Amonte Bowen (165 yards) are among the team's leading rushers, with Bowen registering three TDs on the ground.
Stone Harris has 19 receptions for 335 yards and three touchdowns.
