ABILENE, Texas – McMurry's men's tennis team split a pair of Saturday matches, defeating Schreiner University, 8-1, and losing a marathon nightcap versus UT-Tyler, 5-4. The War Hawks are now 4-2 on the year.
McM dominated the Mountaineers in the morning match, losing only No. 1 doubles play. McMurry took a 2-1 lead after doubles by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 bouts.
Dani Perez and
Gabriel Aboitiz won at second doubles, while
Tom Weir and
Rayce Roberson won at third doubles.
The War Hawks swept all six singles matches in straight sets. Victorious at the Nos. 1-6 slots were, respectively,
Dani Perez,
Casjen Rico, Weir, Roberson,
Carlos Perez and
Clayton Pope.
Versus perennial power UT-Tyler, things were more challenging. McMurry found itself down, 2-1, after doubles play with its lone win coming from Roberson and Weir at No. 3 doubles.
The teams split the six singles contests. The Patriots topped McM at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 singles. Roberson dropped a three-set decision at No. 5 singles to Ryan Elwood (6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-4).
At No. 2 singles,
Dani Perez defeated Chris Wootton in three sets – 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) – to tighten the team score. Likewise, Weir worked overtime at No. 4 singles to gain a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over UTT's Frankie Fisher.
Carlos Perez won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 7-5.
The loss to UT-Tyler snapped a four-match win skein by McMurry.
