SHERMAN, Texas – For the second time this season, the McMurry University women's swimmers defeated Austin College in a dual meet, winning 108-97 on the road. The War Hawks men's squad lost to the Kangaroos, 137-65.
In addition to winning both the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays, the McM women took top honors in seven of the nine individual races in the pool.
Sophomore
Zandria Rodriguez and freshman
Monica Flores each won two individual events for McM's women, while both also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team. Rodriguez was first 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:10.11 minutes and in the 100 breaststroke at 1:19.05.
Flores out-distanced the field in the 200 individual medley by better than eight seconds with a winning time of 2:29.96 minutes. She had an equally impressive victory in the 500 freestyle, touching in 5:52.96 minutes and winning by more than 12 full seconds.
Also earning gold finishes for McM were
Katie Gorka in the 1000 freestyle (12:21.38),
Kelly McNamee in the 200 free (2:16.03) and
Robyn Remschel in the 100 backstroke (1:00.11). Remschel – along with
Samantha Spain – also were on the 200 medley relay quartet. McNamee, Gorka, Spain and
Kelsey Hill were the winning 200 freestyle relay group. Remschel was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle, as well.
Spain was also the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke to Rodriguez. Hill supplemented her day with runner-up places in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle races. McNamee was second in the 100 backstroke.
On the men's side, McMurry had a pair of winners in freshmen Patrick Oysten and
Jerick Pena. Oysten earned to accolades in the grueling 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 11:13.88 minutes (winning by less than two seconds in a tight finish over AC's Bailey Clark).
Pena took first place in the 200 individual medley with a finishing time of 2:05.90. Pena won his race by nearly four full seconds. Pena also took third in the 100 butterfly and Oysten a third in the 100 backstroke.
Senior
Kent Grimes picked up a pair of second place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:59.18) and the 100 backstroke (57.84). Other second place points were earned by
Austin Gombas in the 50 free (24.65),
Craig Bell in the 100 butterfly (57.68) and
Christian Chavez in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.33).
