Women's Soccer Gets by Grace, 3-2, for Third Straight in 2014

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – McMurry University's women's soccer team's win streak was at stake in Omaha on Monday night, but McM managed to come away with a 3-2 victory over Grave University at Tranquility Park. The win over the Royals (1-4) gave the War Hawks (3-0) an-on-going record third win in a row to open the season and extended the team's regular season win streak to six matches (dating back to last season).

In the fifth minute of play, junior midfielder Aleria Luna left-footed a shot over GU goalkeeper Bethany Loux to put the War Hawks on top, 1-0. Senior Kristen Grant assisted on the play.

Just two minutes later, Holiday Williams notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season to put McM on top 2-0, shooting it in from a 45-degree agle. It was Williams' third-consecutive match with a goal scored, tying the school record set by Karina Kreiner in 2004 when she tallied in three-straight, as well (versus Concordia-Texas Mary Hardin-Baylor and Schreiner).

That two-goal cushion stood through the remainder of the half.

After the intermission, the Royals came out and cut into the War Hawks' lead by netting their first goal of the night in the 52nd minute. Hannah Nelson blasted a shot in from 45 yards out, sailing over McM's goalkeeper Ashley Hemphill and making it 2-1.

Paige Harwell, senior midfield, took a pass from Luna and extended McMurry's lead back to two goals, 3-1, with the 20-yard laser. But it was short-lived, as Grace bounded back and made it a one goal game just two minutes later, 3-2.

The defenses took over the balance of the match, leaving it at the 3-2 final.

Hemphill did not register a save. Loux had five for Grace.

The War Hawks held a decided advantage in shot attempts – 29-4 – but little to show for it. Luna had a team-high 15 shots, four on goal. Grant took six attempts at the net.

After three-consecutive road games, McMurry will have eight days to recover before hosting Howard Payne University on September 16 (7 p.m.) at Wilford Moore Stadium.
