Box Score TYLER, Texas – McMurry women's soccer won its second game of the season – and second in less than 20 hours – by defeating Jarvis Christian College, 4-1, on the road. It also marks the first time in school history that the War Hawks have started a season with a 2-0 record and was the squad's fifth-straight regular-season victory (dating back to last season).
"It was very, very hot and we were very, very tired," McM head coach
Alan Riches said. "I think it's a testament to the leadership of our upperclassmen that they were able to 'will' us through and get the win. It would have been easy to make excuses, but they just came out and gave me what they had."
After Thursday night's season-opening win at Southwestern Adventist in Keene, McMurry bused to the Tyler area for Friday's bout. The War Hawks arrived at their hotel around 1 a.m. and had to be up and ready for the Jarvis team with a 1 p.m. start time.
McM senior
Kristen Grant scored, unassisted, in the seventh minute to give her team the quick lead. Less than six minutes later, Grant assisted on a goal by fellow senior
Paige Harwell to put the visiting War Hawks on top, 2-0, in the 13th minute of action.
McMurry would score no more in the period and Jarvis tallied in the 31st minute, making the halftime score 2-1.
In the second half,
Aleria Luna, a junior midfielder who set McM's match assist record (4) last night, netted a beautiful arching goal from 35 yards out in the 49th minute. Harwell assisted on Luna's goal. Then in the 51st minute,
Holiday Williams – fresh off a school-record four-goal match last night – booked goal No. 5, making the score the 4-1 final.
McMurry out-shot the Bulldogs by a 25-6 margin, with 15 attempts going directly on goal.
JCC had three shots on goal, two of which were saved by McM's freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Hemphill.
McMurry will continue its road show on Monday, as it travels to Omaha, Nebraska to face Grace University.
