Box Score TYLER, Texas - McMurry University men's soccer used a second-half blitz to earn a 4-1 season-opening win at Jarvis Christian College. It was the first time that the War Hawks (1-0) have opened with the season with a victory since 2009.
Jarvis started the scoring with a late first-half tally and the 1-0 lead going into the break. But head coach
Paul Tate's team rallied in the second segment, thanks to some senior firepower that saw the upperclassmen put three of the team's four goals in the Bulldogs' net.
In the 55th minute of play, sophomore
Matt Hernandez took a pass from senior
Cody Gentry and found the back of the net to knot matters at 1-1. That paved the way for the McM "vets" to take matters into their own hands…rather, feet.
Jordan Miller pounded home a free kick from the top of the box in the 64th minute with what would prove to be the match-deciding score. A little over 10 minutes later, Jacob Howdeschell found the upper corner, off of Gentry's second assist of the night, to extend the War Hawks' cushion to 3-1.
In the 81st minute – after helping two teammates notch goals – Gentry booked one of his own on the assist from Miller.
"We played well for our first game of the year," Tate said. "It was great to see three seniors score some goals. We just need to keep working hard as a team and take one game at a time."
McMurry continues its road trip on Saturday (7 p.m.) evening at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
