Box Score KEENE, Texas – McMurry University junior
Holiday Williams (Bedford, Texas) almost single-handedly made sure her team started 2014 off on the right foot…literally. Williams' school-record four first half goals as the War Hawks cruised to an 8-0 win at Southwestern Adventist University in the season opener for both teams.
Williams' quartet of net-busters gave her the McM records for most goals scored in a half, as well as in a match. Previously, Heather Vosburgh tallied three goals in a match versus Schreiner on 9/24/2005. Williams' eight points equaled Vosburgh's match record, also set versus Schreiner.
Four goals equaled Williams' entire season output for 2013, when she was the War Hawks' third-leading scorer.
The 8-0 score equaled the school match record for most goals scored in a match and largest margin of victory (both set in an 8-0 win at Wylie College in 2013).
Williams scored like clockwork – in the 18th, 29th, 34th and 37th minutes – to give the War Hawks the upper hand in a big way, early-on. Freshman
Alexa Ledesma Bear (San Antonio, Texas) put in her first collegiate goal late in the opening segment as McMurry carried a 5-0 advantage into then halftime locker room.
The War Hawks added three more tallies in the second half. Senior
Kristen Grant notched a pair of goals, sandwiching Ledesma Bear's second goal of the night, to account for the 8-0 final.
But Williams wasn't the only record-breaker in the game. Junior midfielder
Aleria Luna (Duncanville, Texas) set a McM single match record with three assists. Luna assisted on both of Williams' first two goals and then passed to Grant on the final score of the contest.
Ledesma Bear and Grant each had an assist to go along with their two goals, apiece.
Chelsey Coffey (Texas City, Texas),
Bethany Johnstone (Borger, Texas),
Paige Harwell (Trophy Club, Texas) and
Erin Casey (San Antonio, Texas) all were credited with an assist, as well.
McM goalkeeper
Ashley Hemphill (Lubbock, Texas) had three saves in her first 90 minutes in the Maroon & White. SAU took five shots overall, with three going on-goal. Conversely, the War Hawks took 28 shots, 19 of which went on the nets.
"It was a great early-season win," Riches said. "You never entirely know what to expect in an opening game. And for the first 15-20 minutes, we played like 11 individuals. But then we started to play as a team and began to do the things we practice.
"I was happy for Holiday to get off to a good start like that and set a record in the process. It's pretty special to see an athlete get in a groove like that."
McM won't have long to savor the win. The team will play at Jarvis Christian on Friday (1 p.m.) as a part of a doubleheader with the McM men (3 p.m.).
