ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University tennis teams both came out on the short end of identical 9-0 scores in non-conference action versus Midwestern State University, nationally ranked for both women and men.
In the women's match, MSU (#19 nationally and #1 in the region) swept all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, th War Hawks' tandem of
Lauren Renner and
Shayne Cook lost 8-4, before the Mustangs swept Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by 8-0 scores.
In singles action, MSU won all six matches in straight sets. The visitors dropped just seven games, combined.
On the men's side, it was much the same with MSU - #17 in the nation and #2 in the region- in gaining the early 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles bouts. At No. 3 doubles, McM's
Preston Steblein and
Felipe Cruz dropped a hard-fought decision, 9-8 (10-7).
At No. four singles, Steblein was the only War Hawk not to go down to defeat in straight sets. Steblein won the first set versus MSU's Christopher Norrie, 6-4. Norrie won the set two, 6-3 and the third-set decider, 10-5.
