SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The McMurry men's tennis team won its regular season finale, defeating Our Lady of the Lake University, 6-3, on Saturday. The win improved the War Hawks to 9-7.
McMurry started off the match by taking two of three doubles matches. Despite an infrequent loss by the No. 1 tandem of
Chris Breaux and
Casjen Rico, McM took the remaining two bouts.
Felipe Cruz and
Dani Perez teamed up to win at the No. 2 position (by an 8-2 score), while
Preston Steblein and Christiano Mendes won at No. 3 (8-3).
McMurry lost the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches in tough fashion. At No. 1, Cruz won nhis opening set 6-4 versus Luis Rivera. But he was defeated in the next two sets, 7-5 and 10-8.
Dani Perez lost at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, to Matt Ellis.
McM would flex its muscle in the Nos. 3-6 matches, winning all four in straight sets. At. No. 3, Mendes topped Aaron Rodriguez of OLL, 6-1, 6-1. That was followed by a No. 4 singles win from Steblein, who was leading 5-2 in the first set when Keda Sengai was forced to retire.
At No. 5 singles,
Tom Weir blanked Tanis Martinez, 6-0, in set one, before churning out a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second set. McM's
Carlos Perez dominated A.J. Gallardo, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
