MASON, Texas – In a match that wasn't completed until nearly 11 p.m., McMurry University's men's tennis team dropped a heart-breaking, 5-4, decision to nationally-ranked St. Mary's University. It was the fourth-consecutive loss for the War Hawks (7-5).
St. Mary's, which arrived two hours late to the neutral-site match because of a traffic jam, improved to 10-6 on the year.
The Rattlers, ranked 44th for NCAA Division II in the latest ITA poll, jumped ahead early in the team totals by taking two of three doubles matches to open the day. Earning McM's lone win in pairs play was the duo of
Dani Perez and
Felipe Cruz, topping the Rattlers' Andrej Klipa and Carlos Olea, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles.
The two teams would then split the six singles matches. At No. 2 singles, Cruz was up a set (6-2) and leading 5-2 in the second when SMU's Zach Nicholson was unable to continue and retired.
But both of the other two War Hawk wins – at the Nos. 5 and 6 slots – were three-set victories.
At No. 5, Christiano Mendes was a 6-1 winner in set one against Matt Banner, before dropping the second (6-3). In the deciding third set, Mendes won the decider by a 6-3 score.
No. 6 singles was a similar result for McM's
Casjen Rico. Playing the Rattlers' Brien Galon, Rico opened with a 6-2 win and then lost by the same 6-2 score in set two. In the third, Rico easily won, 6-1.
