Men's Tennis Remains Perfect With Pair of Saturday Wins

MIDLAND, Texas – The McMurry University men's tennis team kept its unblemished record intact on Saturday, winning both of its matches at the Bush Tennis Center. The War Hawks (4-0) defeated UT-Permian Basin, 8-1, and then blanked Sul Ross State University, 9-0.

Versus UTPB, McM got off to a 2-1 lead in the team points by winning Nos 1 and 2 doubles.  Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico defeated the Falcons' Jaxon Immler and Alcaro Sifuentes, 8-5, at No. 1. At No. 2, Felipe Cruz and Preston Steblein were also 8-5 winners, topping the UTPB tandem of Jonathan Rutledge and Adam Cheney.

In singles, McMurry won all six matches. Cruz defeated Meliton Morales in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. McM's Dani Perez also won in two sets at the No. 2 singles position, 6-3, 6-0, over Sifuentes.

At No. 3, it was Christiano Mendes battling back from a tough first-set loss (7-5 tiebreaker), to win his second and third sets versus UTPB's Rutledge, 6-1, 6-3.  At. No. 4 singles, Breaux won a 9-7 tiebreaker in set one and took set two, 6-4, over Cheney.

Rico and Steblein were victorious at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Rico defeated the Falcons' Vicente Veck, 6-4, 6-3, while Steblein dispatched of Justin Delgado, 6-3, 7-6.

After taking care of business versus Heartland Conference foe UT-Permian Basin, McMurry head coach Mark Hathorn juggled his lineup for the out-of-conference match versus Sul Ross State. However, the results was much the same as Hathorn's troops pitched the team's second shutout of the year.

The singles winners – in order – for McMurry were Tom Weir, Carlos Perez, Kendal Mann, Hunter Ward, Marcus Medellen and Donald Matthews.

In doubles, Carlos Perez and Ward won at No. 1, followed by Weir and Mann at No. 2.  No. 3 winners for McM were Taylor Freehauf and Alex Johnson.
