DALLAS, Texas – McMurry University's women's soccer team had its three-match unbeaten streak snapped by perennial power Dallas Baptist University, 10-0, on Thursday evening. The War Hawks saw their record dip to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Patriots improved to 5-2-0,
DBU was ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II in last week's national rankings.
The upstart McM team was no match for the seasoned DBU squad, as the Patriots built a 7-0 lead in the first 21 minutes of the contest and were never threatened. Dallas Baptist eventually led 9-0 at the intermission.
McMurry was out-shot by a 35-3 margin, with 16 shots directly on goal. Ashley Cox and Danielle Presley each had three goals in the match, both notching the “hat trick” during that opening seven-goal salvo by DBU.
For McMurry,
Aleria Luna,
Kristen Grant and
Savannah Whitaker took their team's shots.
The McM team took a huge blow – literally – when goalkeeper
Chanel Felder was kicked in the head early in the first half. Felder tried to continue, but was not on her game and McM head coach
Alan Riches pulled her at the intermission. With Felder the only healthy goalie on his roster, Riches was forced to put a field player –
Paige Harwell - in the net for the balance of the game.”
“(Felder) should be okay,” said Riches. “I don't mess with any head injury and err on the side of caution.
“”On the bright side, I learned more from this game for the future than all of last week (during the unbeaten streak). If I defended and played to only lose 3-0, we don't get any better and the girls understood that.”
Things won't get any easier for the War Hawks the next time out either, as the team travels to face the No. 6-ranked team in NCAA Division II – St. Edward's University – in Austin on Saturday (Noon).
