Track Dominates at HSU Invitational


Results

ABILENE, Texas – The track and field teams of McMurry University dominated the competition at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational, with both teams winning their respective divisions. The War Hawk women out-distanced second place HSU, 297 to 178, while on the men's side, McMurry held a 299-89 margin over runner-up Sul Ross State.

The War Hawk women took first place in 10 of the 20 events contested. McM's men garnered top honors in eight of 19 events.

In the women's competition, McMurry won all three sprint events. Kendra Coleman won the 100 meters in a time of 12.65 seconds, followed by Shanita Coleman in the 200 at 25.83. In the 400, McM went 1-2 with Laura Oviedo turning in a time of 58.54, followed by teammate Ana Villarreal (59.15).

In the 1500, Laura Peery won with a finish of 5:08.01. Brittany McGuire won the 3000 meter steeplechase at 13:47.03 minutes.

McMurry's 4x100 meter relay team – consisting of Carla Burton, Kendra Coleman, Tiana Alexander and Shanita Coleman – won with a time of 47.71 seconds.

In the women's field events, Erin Strickland won the high jump (4'9”) and Mariah Steinbock going over the top in the pole vault at 10'6”. Shanita Coleman (19'2”) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the long jump, with Alexander and LaKendra Matthews finishing second and third, respectively.

In the shot put, McMurry claimed the top two places. Destiny Kesee won at 36'0”, followed by Lara Williams' 35'10 effort.

In the men's dominating win, sophomore thrower Paul Davis not only won the shot put with a heave of 60' 6 ¾”, but also set a school record in the discus. Davis was second overall in the discus, launching the saucer 170' 1” (to best the previous War Hawk best of 169' 9 ¾” by John Rhiddlehoover in 1999).

Additionally, Gavan Bass (23' 0 ½”) won the long jump, with McM jumpers taking seven of the top eight spots in the event.  The War Hawks' Jajuan Austin won the high jump a 6' 7” to round out the field events.

In the 100 meters, McMurry went 1-2 with the tandem of Kenneth Turner (10.79 seconds) and Gavan Bass (10.80).

Trevon Odom won the 200 meters at 22.00 seconds and Kevin Cunningham glided to a first in the 400-meter hurdles in a clocking of 52.74 seconds.

Humberto Ruiz won the men's 3000 steeplechase (10:54.33 minutes).

The 4x100 meter relay quartet of John Keith, Odom, Bass and Turner blazed to a winning time of 41.20 seconds.
