ABILENE, Texas – On Super Bowl Sunday – a day on which many people talk about the odds-makers and compare match-ups – McMurry University quarterback
Jake Mullin will be staring at some pretty formidable foes, as he is featured among the finalists for the
FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year. The results of the voting will be announced on
ESPN2 as a part of the All-Star Football Challenge program, airing between
3-5 p.m. CDT, prior to the big game.
Mullin – from Burleson High School in the Dallas/Fort Worth area – was the only non-NCAA Division I finalist (McMurry is an NCAA III institution). Among the other nominees, which selected one weekly winner during the college football season, is Heisman winner Robert Griffin III (Baylor), projected No. 1 NFL Draft pick Andrew Luck (Stanford) and next year's Heisman hopeful Matt Barkley (USC), to name a few.
While Mullin was looking at some formidable foes in the voting - conducted via social media in both the weekly and finals balloting – in terms of statistics, he had plenty of “rocks” available for his “slingshot” in the “David vs. Goliath” competition. Mullin became a finalist thanks to his performance versus Texas Lutheran University on October 15, 2011, when he threw for 614 yards and four touchdowns in the War Hawks' 60-16 victory over the Bulldogs.
In that game, Mullin completed 43-of-57 passes with no interceptions, on his way to setting both the school and American Southwest Conference records for passing yards in a game. His efforts also helped the McMurry team set an NCAA III record for total offense in a game with 848 total yards.
Mullin, coaches, teammates, McM students and fans will be gathering on the McMurry campus in the Mabee Room (in the Campus Center) to watch the announcement of the winner.
