Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University had seven players score in double figures in a 109-99 American Southwest Conference win at Concordia-Texas. It was the second-straight win for the War Hawks (15-7, 11-7 ASC).
With the win, McMurry moved into a tie for third in the ASC West with Concordia, but has two wins over the Tornados in head-to-head competition.
The first half was played at breakneck speed, with the War Hawks racing out – literally – to a 60-46 halftime lead. The intermission statistics would have been enough to satisfy most teams for an entire game. McM hit better than 58 percent from the field (18-31) and was 21-of-28 from the free throw stripe (75 percent). The War Hawks had 13 assists and out did the Tornados on fast-break points, 14-0, in the stanza.
Both teams also had double-digit turnover totals in the first period, thanks largely to the up-tempo style.
The second half began more controlled in a deliberate half-court style by the Tornados. That allowed the hosts to cut into the McMurry lead, forcing several early turnovers and shooting fouls charged against the War Hawks.
The War Hawks upped its lead to 17 early in the second half, but the Tornados used some clutch long-range shooting to climb back in and, with 13:00 left in the game, CTX was within a single point, 74-73. But as if on cue, McMurry's offense came back to life and had the lead back to double digits after an alley-oop layup and foul shot by
Takoby Jackson within three minutes.
After a pair of free throws by
Alfred Perez with 6:02 left, the War Hawks enjoyed their biggest lead – 97-79 – an 18-point bulge. A three-point play by
Steven Jones kept McM's cushion at 16 (102-86), but that opened the door for a 10-0 run by Concordia to climb within six points, 102-96, with over a minute remaining.
With 36 seconds left, the McMurry lead was just five, 104-99. However, the War Hawks made five of their final six free throws to ice the game.
The War Hawks had all five starters tally in double figures, including:
Dominick Walker (12), Jones (22),
Bryant Taylor (16), Anthony Jackson (14) and
Jaden Isler (11). Additionally,
Bryce Hill (19 points) and Jackson (12 points) hit double figures off the bench.
Taylor had eight assists and Jones topped the War Hawks with nine rebounds. McMurry out-boarded the Tornados by a 46-to-27 margin.
