ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's and men's basketball teams will both close a chapter in their respective histories when the teams travel across town to Hardin-Simmons University for the last time in a regular season game Monday evening. Tip-off for the American Southwest Conference women's game is at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
The War Hawks' athletics program will be leaving NCAA Division III – and the ASC – and begin membership in the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference beginning in the Fall of 2012, as the school moves toward active membership in D-II.
All four teams involved in Monday's doubleheader still have ASC post-season aspirations.
In Monday's McM-HSU women's match-up, the McMurry (13-5, 11-3 ASC) squad is still locked in a heated battle for the top spot in the ASC West Division, currently tied for second place and one game behind leader Concordia-Texas (which the War Hawks have already defeated once this season).
McMurry's women's team – winners of five-straight games - has already clinched a spot in the ASC post-season tournament, even getting some help from the rival Cowgirls last weekend. HSU's win over fifth-place Schreiner on Saturday – combined with the War Hawk win over Texas Lutheran – secured the ASC berth for McMurry.
Hardin-Simmons (9-9, 7-7 ASC) sits in fourth in the ASC West and is still battling to clinch an ASC spot for itself. The Cowgirls' are led by Angela Newcombe, averaging a double-double of 13.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. She ranks ninth in ASC scoring and is second in rebounds.
HSU has three other players – Alexis Popelar (11.8 p.p.g.), Jasmine Lewis (10.4 p.p.g.) and Kara Looten (10.4 p.p.g.) – averaging in double figure scoring.
McMurry counters with sophomore
Keshia Collins, topping the team in scoring at 15.3 p.p.g. (fourth in the ASC). Collins is also fourth in the league in steals at 2.8 per game. Collins is coming off of a double-double versus Texas Lutheran, notching her 17th double figure scoring game this season in 18 games played.
Guard
Rikeita Thomas, who had a team-leading 13 points in the win over TLU, averages 9.6 points per contest. Thomas is one of five War Hawks scoring at better than seven points per game this season.
The McMurry men are coming off a loss at home to Texas Lutheran, snapping a four-game win streak by the War Hawks (13-5, 9-5 ASC). McM is in third in the ASC West but, with seven games left, all five teams behind them in the standings are within five games of McM.
Hardin-Simmons sits in second in the ASC West, two games ahead of McMurry in the loss column. The Cowboys (14-4, 11-3 ASC) have won two straight, including a 74-68 win over Texas Lutheran last Thursday.
Matt Addison is both the Cowboys' and the ASC leading scorer at 28.3 points per game. Addison also tops the charts in free throw percentage (.882) and steals (2.6 s.p.g.). He ranks second in assists (5.0 a.p.g.).
Derrick Jefferson, at 10.8 p.p.g., is second on HSU's scoring list.
McMurry's
Steven Jones is seventh in the ASC in scoring at 17.1 p.p.g. He is also tied with teammate
Dominick Walker for second in ASC rebound at 9.4 caroms per game.
Senior point guard
Jaden Isler leads the ASC in assists at 6.1 helps per game.
Bryce Hill is one of the league's best long-distance shooters at 44.3 percent from three-point range (2nd) and three-pointers made per game at 3.2 (2nd).
The McMurry team leads the ASC in assists at 18.4 per game. The War Hawks are also second in steals with 11.0 thefts per contest. The team also tops the ASC – and nation – in rebound margin at a plus-17.4 boards per game average.
