Box Score
ABILENE, Texas - In a game that often resembled something more like two heavyweight boxers slugging it out, McMurry University was the last man standing in a 115-111 overtime win over Schreiner University at Kimbrell Arena. The American Southwest Conference win improved the War Hawks to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in the ASC, while the Mountaineers fell to 10-8 and 8-6 in league.
"It just seems like we bring out the best in everybody," McM head coach J.D. Isler commented. "We've been playing really, really well defensively, but it seemed like we just couldn't get in a rhythm tonight. I never felt like we got into a good defensive rhythm, but we played hard."
McMurry led by 10 points at the half - 45-35 - and appeared ready to widen the gap. However, Schreiner's Darren Smith had other ideas in the second period.
Smith, who had just one point at halftime, tallied 20 of his game-high 33 points in the second half to lead the Mountaineers back in the second. Smith hit a three-point basket with seven seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 94-94.
That sent the War Hawks into their first OT game of the season. McM would out-score Schreiner 21-17 in the extended segment. McMurry took the lead for good when
Jaden Isler canned a trey to put his team ahead 100-99 with 3:47 left.
But the Mountaineers - and Smith - had one final run for McMurry to withstand. After
Bryce Hill's free throw with 11 seconds left made it 113-108, it appeared McM had things in hand. However, Smith hurried the ball up-court and drained an off-the-glass shot from beyond the arc that would have made any self-respecting H-O-R-S-E player proud, 113-111.
A pair of free throws by McM's
Evan Fletscher sealed the 115-111 win for the War Hawks.
McMurry's Hill had a season-high 27 points to lead a quartet of War Hawks in double digits. Hill hit eight-of-14 from the floor - all from three-point range - and was three-for-four from the free throw line.
After a slow start offensively, senior
Steven Jones finished the night with 17 points and 14 rebounds, for his third-consecutive double-double game, and eighth this season.
Point guard
Jaden Isler poured in 19 points to go along with 13 assists.
Takoby Jackson came off the War Hawk bench to throw down 18 points.
Both teams shot well, with the Mountaineers hitting nearly 60 percent (40-67) from the floor. McMurry wasn't too shabby itself by connecting on 51 percent (39-76). McMurry - the nation's leader in rebound differential - did nothing to hurt that reputation by out-boarding Schreiner, 48-to-32.
"I give my guys a lot of credit," Isler said. "The wind could have gotten knocked out of us at the end of regulation, because we had the game won and they hit a three (to tie the game). But our guys really hung tough."
