High-Flying Men's Basketball Aims for Fifth-Straight Win as Texas Lutheran Comes to Town

Saturday tilt begins at 3 p.m.

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's men's basketball squad, having just survived its first overtime game of the season for a fourth-straight win, will now set its sights on Texas Lutheran University this coming Saturday. Opening tap is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kimbrell Arena.

McM head coach J.D. Isler will be looking to create some distance between his War Hawks – currently sitting in third in the American Southwest Conference West Division – and the rest of his team's pursuers.

TLU is one of those with McM on its radar from its sixth-place spot in the ASC West. The Bulldogs (8-10, 7-7 ASC) dropped a 74-68 decision to the Division's No. 2 team, Hardin-Simmons, across town in Abilene on Thursday.

A quintet of Bulldogs scored in double digits in the loss, led by 14 from guard Michael Flores. As a team, TLU shot a blistering 53 percent from the floor but were victimized by 23 turnovers.

On the year, Isaac Williams' 15.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game tops the Bulldogs in both categories. Flores averages 10.0 p.p.g. on the year as Texas Lutheran's only other double-figure scorer.

In McMurry's OT win over Schreiner last Thursday, senior Steven Jones notched his third-consecutive double-double game with 17 points and 14 rebounds.  Jones has scored in double figures in all 17 games thus far in 2011-12 and, including last season, has a streak of 19-consecutive double-digit scoring games.

Jones is averaging 17.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game to top the War Hawks. Bryce Hill is at 14.3 p.p.g., with Jaden Isler at 13.2 p.p.g. to round out McM's top three scorers.

Hill led the War Hawks with 27 points versus Schreiner. It was his second-straight game with 20-plus points.

Isler is also one of the nation's top assist men at 6.1 “helps” per game. He is coming off of a career-high 13-assist effort against Schreiner.

The McMurry team is leading the nation in rebound margin, averaging a healthy 18.0 rebounds per game more than its opponents.

McMurry's 115 points scored against Schreiner was the most by a War Hawks' team since the 2005-06 season. The War Hawks also tallied 115 versus Concordia-Wisconsin on Nov. 19, 2005 at the Lee Pfund Classic at Wheaton (Ill.) College.
