Defending champ UT-Tyler ousts McMurry men from ASC Tennis Championships

Daniel Olivares was one of four seniors likely to play his last match Saturday against UT-Tyler in the ASC semifinals

BELTON, Texas – McMurry University's men's tennis season came to an end Saturday morning when three-time defending American Southwest Conference Champion UT-Tyler beat the War Hawks 5-0 in the semifinals round of the ASC Championships.

The season comes to an end after a school record 19 victories, and the season featured a nine-match win streak, three wins over NCAA Division II schools and a regular season win over UT-Tyler Feb. 19 – the first in school history for McMurry over the Patriots.

However, it was UT-Tyler that gained revenge today sweeping doubles play, and the Patriots took wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 singles court to put the match away. The Patriots will advance to play the winner of Hardin-Simmons and Mississippi College Sunday for the ASC title.

It is possible, however unlikely that McMury could earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament, however without the automatic bid of an ASC title, an at-large would be a reach.

If Saturday was in fact McMurry's last match, head coach Mark Hathorn will bid farewell to four seniors: Daniel Olivares, Bryan Rainwater, Adam Ewing, and Tony Williams. The four men played a role in McMurry's first two ASC West Division titles in 2009 and 2010 as well as the single-season school record for wins in 2011 with 19.
