RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Texas at Dallas outscored McMurry University by 20 points in the first half to hand the War Hawks their first loss of the season in American Southwest Conference game Saturday afternoon, 94-86. The War Hawks made a late run in the second half of the game, but fell short of the victory.
McMurry's
Steven Jones scored 21 points leading all scorers, adding five rebounds and three assists.
Bryce Hill,
Jaden Isler, and
Bryant Taylor each scored 12 points and recorded three assists in the game.
Dominick Walker added 11 points and a team high six rebounds in the loss.
The War Hawks fell behind early allowing a 14-2 run in the first 3:43 of the game. McMurry immediately answered with a 12-2 run of their own capped off by a Hill fast break layup with 11:46 remaining in the half to cut the Comets lead to two. For the remainder of the first half UTD outscored McMurry 30-12 giving them the 46-26 halftime lead.
The Comets in the second half extended their lead to 26 after two UTD free throw shot with 7:51 remaining in the half. McMurry ended the game on a 15-5 run but the 20-point halftime lead allowed the Comets to hold on for the victory. McMurry shot 51 percent from the floor in the second half outscoring the Comets 60-48. The War Hawks scored 12 points off of seven-second half turnovers by UTD.
The loss is the first of the season for McMurry falling to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in ASC play. The Comets move to 6-1 on the year and 3-1 in ASC action. McMurry returns home to face East Texas Baptist University Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena.
