MUSKOGEE, Okla. – McMurry picked up its first road win in a season opener since the 2004 season with a 41-6 victory over Bacone College at the Indian Bowl Saturday night.
Jake Mullin tied a career high with five touchdown passes and the McMurry defense held the Bacone College Warriors to only 222 total yards.
Mullin completed 26 of 39 yards and threw for 420 yards spreading his five scores to four different receivers including two to
Marcus Franklin. The 420 yards was the second-highest passing total in Mullin's two-year career.
Franklin led a big night for McMurry receivers with nine catches for 145 yards and two scores and
R.J. Long caught six passes for 117 yards and a score. Mullin also completed touchdown passes to
Delfonte Diamond and
Antwaun Harris
McMurry scored 38-straight points before Bacone College eventually got on the board in the fourth quarter when Bryan Perkins scored on a 21-yard pass from backup quarterback Gerald Montgomery.
The first-team defense for McMurry held the Warriors to just 54 yards in the first half and pitched a shutout. McMurry also won the turnover battle with
Jimmy Terrell recording an interception in the first half and
Jacob Owen grabbed a pick in the second half.
Mullin completed four first-half touchdowns to four different receivers. McMurry started with just seven points in the first quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Long before exploding for 24 points in the second quarter. Mullin added touchdown strikes of 70, seven and 60 yards to Franklin, Harris and Diamond respectively in the second quarter. He last threw five touchdown passes Oct. 24, 2009 against Texas Lutheran
Diamond caught just two passes but accumulated 96 receiving yards and
Eric Shaffer caught three passes for 50 yards. All in all, McMurry gained 457 yards of total offense on the evening.
Defensively,
Corey Hall led McMurry with nine tackles and had three for a loss. Terrell finished with six tackles and
Kevin Stewart recorded two sacks.
Kyle Kelley, in his first start at linebacker after transitioning from offense in 2009, had five tackles, three for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
Bacone's top performer was Jamario Thomas who had 85 yards on 18 carries and Cedric Pierce had seven tackles on defense for the Warriors.
McMurry defeated Colorado College 52-7 in its season opener in Colorado Springs, Colo. to begin the 2004 season. The victory was also the first season-opening win overall since 2005 when McMurry took a 40-30 victory over Menlo College at home.
Bacone College moves to 1-1 and McMurry improves to 1-0 and will play host to Texas College Saturday at 6 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
