Improved McMurry team ends season with loss to East Texas Baptist

First-year head coach Alan Riches helped McMurry snap a three-season losing skid and finished the year with two wins
ABILENE, Texas- East Texas Baptist defeated McMurry's women's soccer team 4-0 in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Edwards Field. The game winner came in just the sixth minute of the match when Rebecca Davis dribbled the ball around the diving McMurry goalie Bianca Van Osdol and scored on an empty net.

McMurry played without a sub due to multiple injuries for the second-straight day. ETBU would score three of its four goals in the first hal,f the first coming in the 6th minute by Davis with the assist coming from Danica Saxon. The Tigers added unassisted goals in the 13th and 63rd minute of the contest. Collins scored her second goal when she took a pass from Ashley Ratcliff and put a header past a diving Van Osdol.

Rachel Moore took six shots with four coming on goal in the losing effort for McMurry while Van Osdol recorded six saves and allowed four goals in 90 minutes in goal.

Despite its 2-15 finish head coach Alan Riches was pleased with the team's performance during the season as he said, “Our goal from the beginning of the season was to break the losing streak and not finish last in the conference. We accomplished that goal this year and next year I expect us to exceed what we have done this year.”

Prior to Riches arrival on campus as first-year head coach, McMurry went three consecutive seasons without a victory from 2007-09.

On the season, Moore led the team with five goals with Stephanie Nevels following behind her with four. The five goals for Moore will tie her for fourth with Theresa Sanches on the single-season goals list in McMurry history. Both Moore and Nevels were freshmen.

“Having freshmen step up in those key roles is a vital part to rebuilding a program,” Riches said. “With them and having a core group of veteran starters returning I think we are on the right path of rebuilding.”

Moore will also move into second on the top seasons list for shots with 46 shots and second in shots on goal with 28.

McMurry's total of 13 goals on the season reached its highest total since the 2006 season. McMurry snapped a 52 game winless streak on September 24 over the University of the Ozarks in a 4-1 victory. McMurry finished 2-15 overall and 2-11 in league play.
