Box Score

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry excited a Homecoming crowd at Wilford Moore Stadium Saturday by setting or tying four American Southwest Conference records and four school records in a 63-14 win over Texas Lutheran. Quarterback Jake Mullin and R.J. Long legitimized the Air Raid Offense name and McMurry passed for an ASC record 534 yards Saturday.

Mullin, who tied Braxton Shaver's 1998 single-season touchdown record Saturday with 34, tied his own school and ASC record with seven touchdown passes to accompany 476 yards through the air. Long caught 10 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns making several tough catches in single coverage.

McMury set the tone in the first quarter after Texas Lutheran's opening offensive drive halted and Dillon Koop's punt was fair caugh at the McMurry 14-yard line by D.J. Baiza. On McMurry's first offensive drive, Mullin dropped back to pass and hit a streaking Marcus Franklin who caught the ball at the TLU 35-yard line and raced into the endzone for an 86-yard touchdown score.

The home team in its 83rd Homecoming game scored the first four touchdowns of the game, all coming from the arm of Mullin. Trailing 28-0, TLU showed glimmers of hope by scoring on two-straight offensive possessions on a 5-yard run by quarterback Mitchell Bunger and 1-yard touchdown rush by Charles Cooper at 7:45 and 1:23 respectively in the second quarter.

However, McMurry nixed any rally by TLU after a good kickoff return to the McMurry 34-yard line by D.J. Baiza plus a 15-yard personal foul call on the Bulldgos put McMurry at its own 49-yard line with 1:10 to go. Austin Brooks capped a 4-play 51-yard drive with a 2-yard carry for a score and McMurry was able to take a 35-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After receiving the opening kickoff o the second half, McMurry closed the door with an eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive capped by Mullin's fifth touchdown pass of the day; this one to Eric Shaffer for 36 yards.

From there, Mullin found Franklin again from 38 yards out in the third quarter for a touchdown, Brooks caught a 1-yard touchdown pass in the fourth from Mullin and backup quarterback Stephen Warren found Dixon Kent for a 9-yard touchdown catch for the game's final touchdown with 8:25 to go in the game. Both Long's touchdown grabs came in the first half.

Like Saturday, Mullin threw seven touchdown passes and Warren threw one against Texas College Sept. 11 in Abilene, which set the ASC record for team touchdown passes. The pair tied their own record again Saturday. Mullin finished 26 of 38 with no interceptions and his 476 yards was the third-highest total of his 16-game career. The junior now has just one interception on 294 pass attempts this season. Warren finished 4 of 5 for 58 yards.

Franklin caught five touchdowns for 156 yards and two touchdowns while Brooks tallied 96 all-purpose yards and accounted for three touchdowns.

Defensively, other than the 14-point second quarter by the Bulldogs, McMurry held TLU to 344 yards of total offense and caused five turnovers. TLU quarterback Mitchell Bunger threw four interceptions and Cooper lost a fumble. Kerry Gamble led the charge for McMurry with 10 tackles while Baiza and Jimmy Terrell had seven apiece. Austin Cleere, Will Morris, Jacob Owen and Josh McKinnis all had interceptions for McMurry.

McMury has five wins through its first seven games, and it marks the first five-win season for a McMurry team since the 2005 season when head coach Joe Crousen's team went 5-5.

McMurry heads into a bye week before facing its cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons Oct. 30 at HSU's campus. The Cowboys carry a 4-1 league record to Seguin Saturday. McMurry improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
