ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University rebounded from a Thursday loss to take a convincing 82-64 victory over Concordia-Texas Saturday at Kimbrell Arena. Four players scored in double figures for McMurry led by
Anna Berthel's 17 points and McMurry shot 47 percent from the field.
McMurry had one of its hottest shooting efforts of the season in the first hand when the team connected on 19 of 33 shots and took a 48-38 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, McMurry built an 18-point lead with 13:41 remaining before CTX slowly climbed back into the game. With 4:32 remaining, the Lady Tornados' Margaret Milling hit a jumper to cut the lead to 10 points at 72-62. However, from there McMurry closed the game with a 10-2 run to seal the game.
Berthel had only three field goals but made the most of her 12 free-throw opportunities making 11. La Porsha Alexander had 15 points and nine rebounds,
Amanda Peters tied a career-high with 14 points and
Erica Rawls added a dozen to pace McMurry's strong offensive output.
Rikeita Thomas and
Kelsey Lindemuth paced McMurry's offensive effort with six and five assists respectively while the team finished 29 of 62 from the field and tied a season-high with seven 3-point field goals.
Concordia-Texas shot just 37 percent from the floor and the Tornados could only hit 8 of 26 shots from the floor in the second half. The Tornados had a good effort from the free-throw line as well hitting 23 of 30 free shots while McMurry finished 17 of 20.
Kerrie Carter led all scorers with 21 points and she grabbed nine rebounds in the losing effort for CTX. Milling added 14 points and four assists while Skylar Lott had 13 points, seven boards and three blocks; Julia Bellquist added 10 points.
McMurry improved to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in American Southwest Conference play. Hardin-Simmons' loss kept McMurry at fourth-place in the ASC West Division. CTX fell to 7-12 overall on the season and 5-10 in league play. McMurry returns to action Monday across town in Abilene when taking on HSU at 5:30 p.m.
