McMurry falls in overtime to Lady Eagles, 77-73

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Sabrina Goddard scored 21 points in the final 25 minutes, including the basket that forced overtime helping the University of the Ozarks defeat McMurry 77-73 in extra minutes Friday night.

Goddard, the Lady Eagles leading scorer, was held without a point in the first half, however, she exploded for 14 points in the second half and seven of the Ozarks' 16 points in overtime. She also finished with four blocks on her way to helping the Lady Eagles to their first American Southwest Conference win of the season and second win overall.

McMurry came back from a nine-point deficit in the second half. In fact, the visitors never led until 8:05 left in the game when Anna Berthel hit a layup to give McMurry a 52-50 lead. Later, Berthel's jumper extended McMurry's lead to six at 61-55 with 2:28 left. However, April Young hit a jumper with 1:56 left, Goddard added two free throws with 1:04 to cut the lead to two points, and then, with 18 seconds remaining she hit a contested jumper in the paint to knot the score at 61.

With 18 seconds remaining, McMurry's Rikeita Thomas missed a floating jumper in the paint, Berthel got the rebound, but missed the put back and the game went to overtime. Amanda Peters hit a pair of free throws with 2:07 left in overtime to break a 68-68 tie. However, from there the Eagles closed the game with a 9-3 run including a go-ahead 3-pointer by April Young with 1:09 remaining.

Goddard finished 8 of 14 from the floor, 8 of 13 from the free-throw line and had nine rebounds. Young scored 18 points, Chelsea Glassock had 15 and Lindsey Louks had a dozen.

McMurry's Berthel scored 18, Peters had 12 and Kelsey Lindemuth had 10 in the losing effort for McMurry. McMurry dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Lady Eagles improved to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in ASC competition.

McMurry will try to move back to the .500 mark Sunday against UT-Dallas at 2 p.m. in Ricahrdson.
