ABILENE, Texas -- Senior guard
Jonathan Walker scored a game-high 26 points Thursday night to lead McMurry to its seventh straight victory as McMurry topped Sul Ross State, 86-76, in an American Southwest Conference West Division game at Kimbrell Arena.
But the win was not on the minds of the McMurry players after the contest concluded as their thoughts were with teammate
Scott Hurley, who left the game by way of a stretcher after a flagrant foul with just a minute and 21 seconds left in the contest.
Hurley, a freshman from Georgetown, Texas, was going full speed on a fast-break situation and was fouled hard when he went up for a layup attempt, which caused him to flip in the air and land face first on the ground. The McMurry sports medicine staff along with medical technicians took full precautions as they placed Hurley on a stretcher and took him to Hendrick Medical Center. McMurry is relieved to announce that Hurley just suffered a sore neck and facial bruising from the violent fall, and that he is expected to make a full recovery.
After Hurley left the court in front of a standing ovation at Kimbrell Arena, the game was still up for grabs as McMurry held a slight 73-68 advantage. Senior guard
Robert Moreno came in for Hurley and nailed both of the flagrant foul free throws. It was the first action for Moreno in nearly three games as he is nursing an injury.
McMurry also got the ball back because of the flagrant foul, and Moreno was immediately fouled and sent back to the line. This time Moreno made 1 of 2 from the charity stripe to give McMurry a 76-68 advantage with just 1:13 remaining. After a defensive stop by McMurry, sophomore forward
Richard Jones made a layup for McMurry to push their lead back to double digits (78-68 with 53 seconds remaining). McMurry and Sul Ross State traded buckets from there as McMurry ended up winning by a 10-point margin.
The win improves McMurry to 11-4 overall and 10-1 in ASC play. Meanwhile, the loss drops Sul Ross State to 4-11 and 4-8. McMurry returns to action on Saturday when they host Howard Payne for another ASC West game at Kimbrell Arena. Tip time is slated for 5 p.m.
Walker, the ASC's leading scorer, led all scorers again with his 26 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the field. Junior guard
Ricky Burney also had a solid all-around game for McMurry as he finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior guard
Dewayne Hall added 11 points and Jones chipped in 10 for McMurry.
