PLAINVIEW, Texas -- McMurry couldn't quite overcome a 13-point halftime deficit as Wayland Baptist survived a fierce second-half comeback by McMurry in the Flying Queens' 64-58 win at the Hutcherson Center on Saturday afternoon.
An
Anna Berthel layup with 1:07 remaining in regulation cut McMurry's deficit to only four, as the Lady Queens held a 62-58 advantage. But Wayland Baptist made a pair of free throws down the stretch and McMury had sloppy offensive execution as the Flying Queens escaped with the non-conference win.
McMurry falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss. McMurry's next game is its American Southwest Conference opener against Louisiana College on Saturday, Nov. 29. Tip time is slated for 1 p.m. from Kimbrell Arena.
It was a disastrous three-minute stretch in the first half that doomed McMurry. Both teams were tied at five just three minutes into the game before the Flying Queens mounted a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to give them an 18-5 advantage. McMurry was riddled with turnovers during that stretch, while Wayland Baptist nailed three 3-pointers and two outside jumpers.
McMurry bounced back after that tough three-minute stretch as the teams played fairly even the remainder of the first half. Wayland Baptist's biggest lead in the first half was 15 (37-22) with only 1:31 remaining in the frame. The Flying Queens took a 37-24 advantage into halftime.
The biggest discrepancy between the teams in the first half was 3-point shooting. Wayland Baptist converted 55-percent of its long-range shots (5 of 9), while McMurry was 0 for 6 from behind the arc.
McMurry started the second half on a 9-1 run to cut its deficit to only five (38-33). McMurry got as close as two points (47-45) when
Ashley Stephens nailed a 3-pointer in the corner with 11:30 remaining in regulation.
But the Flying Queens responded with a 9-0 run to push their lead back to 11 (56-45). That double-digit deficit proved to be too much for McMurry to overcome as the Flying Queens held on late.
Berthel scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots to lead McMurry's effort.
Allison Nelson added 11 points and
Amber Horton chipped in 10 points to finish out McMurry's double-digit scorers.
Other top performers for McMurry included
Callie Williams, who scored eight points of the bench; Stephens, who finished with seven points and three rebounds; and
Dominique Brown, who finished with six points, six steals and five assists.
The Flying Queens improve to 4-1 with the win.
