GARLAND, TX – The McMurry University men's swimming team kicked off the 2026 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships on Wednesday evening at the Garland ISD Natatorium. After the first day of relay action, the War Hawks sit in fourth place with 74 points.
The McMurry men opened the night with a strong showing in the 200-yard medley relay. The "A" team of
Victor Zambrano,
Wes Scalf,
Daniil Kochkonbaev, and
Harrison Brown touched the wall in 1:36.21 to secure a fourth-place finish in the championship final. Their performance earned the team 30 points right out of the gate.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the War Hawks continued to hold their own against a fast field. The quartet of
Matt Martinez,
Adrian Pena,
Victor Zambrano, and
Montgomery Cortez combined for a time of 7:27.11, finishing seventh in the championship final to add another 24 points to the team's total.
McMurry's "B" relay teams also made significant contributions to the opening day score. The team of
Kristopher Cantu,
Sterling Wright,
Zachary Lindley, and
Montgomery Cortez placed 13th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.78. Later in the evening,
Levi Kleen,
Matthias Ulch, Clay Sumrow, and Eli Russell powered through the 800 freestyle relay "B" final to finish 11th with a time of 8:01.82.
Top Four McMurry Performers - Day One
- Victor Zambrano (So.): A workhorse for the War Hawks, Zambrano swam the backstroke leg for the 4th-place 200 medley relay and the third leg of the 800 freestyle relay.
- Wes Scalf (So.): The sophomore provided a critical breaststroke split for the "A" 200 medley relay, helping the team secure its top-four finish.
- Matt Martinez (So.): Martinez led off the 800 freestyle relay with a strong opening leg, setting the pace for the team's seventh-place finish.
- Harrison Brown (Sr.): The senior captain anchored the 200 medley relay "A" team with a split of 21.72 to bring home 30 points.
