SAN ANTONIO, TX - The McMurry Men's Swimming team kicked off the highly competitive Trinity University Tiger Invitational on Friday, facing off against top programs in the region. The War Hawks showed grit and determination throughout the day, posting fast times in relays and individual events, setting the stage for a strong weekend of competition.
Relay Highlights: Team Depth on Display
The War Hawks entered four teams across the two major relays, showcasing the depth of the squad.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the 'A' team of Harrison Brown, Sterling Wright, Kristopher Cantu, and Wes Scalf finished in 14th place with a time of 1:30.35, competing hard against a fast field. The 'B' team of Matt Martinez, Daniil Kochkonbaev, Montgomery Cortez, and Victor Zambrano also posted a solid time of 1:33.72, showing the team's ability to put up strong finishes consistently.
The momentum continued in the 400 Yard Medley Relay, the final event of the night. The 'A' squad of Victor Zambrano, Wes Scalf, Daniil Kochkonbaev, and Harrison Brown placed 16th with a time of 3:40.37. The 'C' team of Eli Russell, Matthias Ulch, Adrian Pena, and Kristopher Cantu posted a time of 3:57.07.
Individual Performance: Scalf and Zambrano Lead the Way
The War Hawks had several athletes compete in the individual events, with sophomore Wes Scalf leading the charge in the sprints.
In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Scalf qualified for the 'A' Final after swimming a speedy 21.36 in the prelims. Despite a disappointing disqualification in the final, his preliminary time was highly competitive, demonstrating his top-tier speed.
Victor Zambrano swam a strong 200 Yard Individual Medley, finishing the 'B' Final in 19th place with a time of 2:01.32. Zambrano also contributed a strong swim in the 500 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 5:04.99.
