SAN ANTONIO – The McMurry women's basketball team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend on the road with a 65-57 win over Trinity on Friday night.
The War Hawks moved to 8-2 overall and were able to start off their conference slate with a 1-0 record, while Trinity fell to 6-6, 2-1 in conference play, respectfully.
The early stages of the game saw a defensive battle, with both teams having a hard time scoring a lot of points early on. The Tigers led throughout most of the opening quarter, before McMurry was able to take a lead in the final moments of the first quarter before Trinity tied the game with a free throw at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter consisted of a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. McMurry was able to continue responding every time Trinity would get some momentum going, before they were finally able to string together a few baskets and stops on the defensive end. The War Hawks were able to finish the half on a 7-0 run to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, McMurry was able to put some distance in between them and the home team for the first time in the contest. Shots were falling and the defense was being much more stingy, allowing the War Hawks to add to their lead that they built up at the end of the first half. Trinity would not go away lightly, though. The Tigers were able to once again tighten up the contest at 49-45, before a couple of huge 3-pointers by McMurry put the War Hawks back up by 10. McMurry would not let Trinity get much closer for the rest of the contest, proving their ability to close out tough games on the road.
"Proud of the girls and how they responded tonight. It was an ugly game at times but they did a good job of keeping their composure and finishing plays down the stretch. Trinity is a tough team, it was a great road win for our program." Said McMurry head coach Drew Long after the game.
McMurry was led by Emily Holland with 23 points, followed by Aryana Cleveland with 13 points, while Trinity was led by Josie Napoli with 18 points.
The War Hawks are back in action tomorrow at 4pm as they take on Schreiner in a conference matchup in Kerrville.
