Box Score 3 McMurry University softball split a weekend series with Sul Ross State University in Alpine, falling 9-5, and winning 7-4 and 6-4.
In the first game Friday, April 5, coach David McNally's team scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the seventh. Sophomore third baseman Miranda Soileau (Houston, Texas) doubled down the left field line in the fourth for a RBI, getting to third base on the throw and allowing junior right fielder Aliyah Tanguma (Kyle, Texas) to score. Sophomore first baseman Trista Brown (Crosby, Texas) then singled to center field for a RBI and Soileau went home. In the seventh, Soileau tripled to left field for a 3 RBI, scoring Tanguma, sophomore shortstop Morgan Faubion (Crosby, Texas) and senior left fielder Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas). McMurry got eight hits with contributions from Faubion (2), Tanguma (2), Soileau (2) and Brown (2).
Fifth-year senior Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas), who threw 4.1 innings, was given the loss.
In Friday's second game, McMurry scored twice in the first inning, twice in the fourth, and once each in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Junior center fielder Mercedes Camacho (El Paso, Texas) singled to right field in the first for a RBI, freshman first baseman/designated player Reaghan Staehely (Mission, Texas) went to second, freshman third baseman Elaina Herrera (Belton, Texas) advanced to third and freshman shortstop Samantha Gonzales (Hamlin, Texas) crossed home plate. Camacho then went to second, Staehely moved to third and Herrera scored on an error by the pitcher. In the fourth, freshman designated player Sophia Fuller (Eagle River, Alaska) singled to right center for a RBI, allowing Abila to go home. Staehely then singled to left center and got to second for a RBI, and Fuller scored on an error by the center fielder. In the fifth, junior catcher Morgan Mehaffey (Hamilton, Texas) grounded out to third base for a RBI, and Faubion crossed home plate. In the sixth, Staehely grounded out to second base for a RBI, scoring freshman pinch runner Lillian Contreras (Corpus Christi, Texas). In the seventh, Gonzales singled to left center for a RBI, and freshman second baseman Kaelyn Rodriguez (Helotes, Texas) went home. McMurry collected seven hits with contributions from Abila, Gonzales (2), Fuller, Staehely, Camacho, and junior right fielder Tristyn Barton (Belton, Texas). Contreras stole a base and Faubion stole two.
Freshman Emmalee Gebhart (Vail, Arizona), who threw six innings, got the win to even her record at 1-1. Junior Baylee Fulps (San Angelo, Texas) threw one inning.
In the game Saturday, April 6, McMurry scored two runs each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Junior catcher Sabrina Graf (San Antonio, Texas) singled down the left field line in the fourth and advanced to second on the throw for a 2 RBI, scoring both Mehaffey and Tanguma. In the sixth, Graf flied out to right field for a sacrifice RBI, sending Contreras to third and Tanguma home. Staehely then doubled to left field for a RBI and Contreras crossed home plate. In the seventh, Tanguma doubled to left center and got to third on the throw for a RBI, scoring Abila. Soileau then singled to left field for a RBI and Tanguma went home. McMurry had 11 hits with contributions from Abila, Faubion (3), Brown, Tanguma (2), Soileau, Fuller, Graf and Staehely. Faubion, Mehaffey and Contreras each stole a base.
Junior Maya Mongelli (Lubbock, Texas), who went the distance in throwing seven innings while striking out one, raised her record to 2-1.
The games don't count in the American Southwest Conference standings because the opponent is reclassifying to Division 2.
McMurry, 17-8 overall and 7-5 in conference, hosts LeTourneau University at Edwards Field next weekend with games at 4 and 6 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
