ABILENE, TX - The McMurry War Hawks faced off against the #2 seed University of St. Thomas on May 3, 2026, at Edwards Field in a SCAC Tournament elimination game. The final score was 6-2 in favor of St. Thomas.
McMurry scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Kaelyn Rodriguez hit a single and was eventually brought home when
Sophia Steele singled to center field. St. Thomas quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of home runs, taking a 3-1 advantage.
The War Hawks narrowed the deficit in the top of the second inning.
Brooklyn Nehring hit a double, stole third base, and scored on a groundout by
Taylor McCurdy to make it 3-2. St. Thomas went scoreless in the bottom of the second.
In the third inning, McMurry threatened with a pair of runners but was unable to score. St. Thomas extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning, adding two runs on an RBI single and an RBI double to make it 5-2.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning. In the fifth,
Reaghan Staehely and
Sophia Steele both hit singles, but the War Hawks couldn't capitalize on the momentum. St. Thomas added their final run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double, pushing their lead to 6-2.
McMurry was unable to generate any offense in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh,
Samantha Gonzalez singled and
Sophia Steele was hit by a pitch, but the War Hawks were unable to close the gap further.
Top Performers
- Sophia Steele: Reached base safely in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with an RBI single and a hit-by-pitch. She also threw out a potential base stealer in the bottom of the first inning.
- Brooklyn Nehring: Went 1-for-3 at the plate, providing a spark with a double, a stolen base, and a run scored.
- Reaghan Staehely: Put together a solid day offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
- Sophia Garza: Provided excellent relief pitching out of the bullpen, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing zero hits, walking none, and striking out two batters.
