KERRVILLE, TX - It was a split decision on the diamond for our McMurry War Hawks in their doubleheader against Schreiner on April 17th in Kerrville. The War Hawks dominated game one with an 8-0 shutout victory, but fell just short in game two, dropping a tight 3-2 battle.
Game One: McMurry 8, Schreiner 0
The War Hawks' offense clicked immediately in the first game. In the top of the first inning,
Angelina Kulbeth ripped an RBI double to right field, scoring
Kaelyn Rodriguez.
Reaghan Staehely immediately followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Kulbeth home and giving McMurry an early 2-0 lead. The Hawks extended their lead in the third inning when
Marissa Cardenas singled to left field, driving in
Taylor McCurdy. In the fifth,
Sophia Steele reached on a double and later scored on a fielding error to make it 4-0.
McMurry broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth inning.
Kaelyn Rodriguez hit an RBI single to score
Kami Owen. Moments later,
Taylor McCurdy stole second base, allowing Rodriguez to score.
Reaghan Staehely then reached on a fielder's choice that brought McCurdy across the plate.
Marissa Cardenas capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single to center field, scoring Staehely to comfortably seal the 8-0 victory.
Rexie Sanders was masterful in the circle for the War Hawks, pitching a complete game shutout. She went six innings, allowing zero runs on just three hits to secure the win.
Game Two: Schreiner 3, McMurry 2
Game two of the doubleheader was a much tighter contest. McMurry struck first again in the top of the first inning when
Reaghan Staehely hit an RBI single to center field, scoring
Kaelyn Rodriguez. However, Schreiner responded with an unearned run in the second inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the third, Schreiner took a 3-1 lead on a two-run double to left field.
The War Hawks battled back in the top of the sixth inning. After
Sophia Steele doubled to right field,
Shaylee Rodmaker came in to pinch-run.
Marissa Cardenas hit a grounder that resulted in a shortstop error, allowing Rodmaker to score and cutting the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, the Hawks couldn't push across the tying run in the final frame.
Nyema Muhammad started in the circle for McMurry, pitching 2.1 innings before
Sophia Garza entered in relief. Garza threw 3.2 scoreless innings to keep the Hawks in the game, striking out three batters.
Top Performers
Rexie Sanders: Commanded the circle with a dominant complete-game shutout in game one, allowing just three hits over six innings of work.
Marissa Cardenas: Was a consistent offensive threat across both games. She collected two hits and two RBIs in the first game and added a double and another single in the second game to go 2-for-3.
Reaghan Staehely: Proved to be a clutch run producer, tallying two RBIs in the game one victory and adding an RBI single to open the scoring in game two.
Kaelyn Rodriguez: Set the table perfectly at the top of the lineup. She scored two runs and drove in another in game one , and drew a first-inning walk to score the Hawks' opening run in game two.

The War Hawks will complete their series and wrap up their regular season against Schreiner on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., as they look to head into the conference tournament at Edwards Field on a winning note.
