McMurry softball wins series with Concordia!

McMurry University softball won a weekend series with Concordia University in Austin, winning 12-2, falling 7-6 and winning 5-3.

In the first game Friday, April 19, coach David McNally's team scored five runs in the first inning, three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman Miranda Soileau (Houston, Texas) singled up the middle in the first inning for a RBI, freshman first baseman/designated player Reaghan Staehely (Mission, Texas) advanced to second base, sophomore first baseman Trista Brown (Crosby, Texas) went to third and senior left fielder Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) scored. Junior right fielder Tristyn Barton (Belton, Texas) then homered for a grand slam, sending Soileau, Staehely and Brown across home plate. In the fourth, Abila tripled to right field for a 2 RBI, and freshman shortstop Samantha Gonzales (Hamlin, Texas) and Barton scored. Sophomore shortstop Morgan Faubion (Crosby, Texas) then flied out to center field for a sacrifice RBI and Abila went home. In the fifth, Barton walked for a RBI, Soileau moved to second, freshman designated player Sophia Fuller (Eagle River, Alaska) advanced to third and Staehely scored. Gonzales then doubled to left center for a 2 RBI, Barton went to third and Soileau and Fuller crossed home plate. Also in the fifth, sophomore outfielder Mikaila Wagner (San Angelo, Texas) flied out to center field for a sacrifice RBI, Gonzales advanced to third and Barton scored. McMurry got 10 hits with contributions from Abila (2), Faubion, Staehely, Soileau (2), Barton, Gonzales (2) and freshman second baseman Kaelyn Rodriguez (Helotes, Texas). Faubion stole a base.

Fifth-year senior Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas) went the distance in throwing five innings and striking out one batter to raise her record to 12-4.

In Friday's second game, McMurry scored once in the second inning, twice each in the fifth and sixth, and once in the seventh. An error by the third baseman in the second allowed Soileau to reach first base and go to second, junior right fielder Aliyah Tanguma (Kyle, Texas) to advance to second and then to third, and Staehely to move to third and then score. In the fifth, Tanguma singled to right field for a 2 RBI, Staehely went to second, and Faubion and Abila scored. In the sixth, Faubion reached on a fielder's choice and got to third on an error, Wagner advanced to third and then scored on the same error, and junior catcher Maya Mongelli (Lubbock, Texas) also scored on an error by the first baseman. In the seventh, Mongelli singled up the middle for a RBI, Barton moved to second and Soileau went home. McMurry collected eight hits with contributions from Faubion (2), Staehely (2), Tanguma (2), Soileau and Mongelli. Staehely and Soileau each stole a base.

Junior Baylee Fulps (San Angelo, Texas), who threw 7.2 innings and struck out three, was given the loss.

In the game Saturday, April 20, McMurry scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings, and three runs in the sixth. Freshman pinch runner Lillian Contreras (Corpus Christi, Texas) stole second base in the fourth inning and Faubion scored on the throw. In the fifth, Wagner singled up the middle for a RBI and Mongelli crossed home plate. In the sixth, Brown doubled to center field for a RBI and junior catcher Morgan Mehaffey (Hamilton, Texas) scored. Wagner then singled down the left field line for a 2 RBI, senior designated player Kate Casey (Thorndale, Texas) moved to second, and Mongelli and Brown went home. McMurry had nine hits with contributions from Faubion (2), Staehely, Brown (3), Mongelli, and Wagner (2). Staehely and Contreras each stole a base.

Junior utility player Mackenzie McClellan (Devine, Texas),  got the win in going the distance of seven innings while striking out six.

McMurry, 21-10 overall and 13-8 in the American Southwest Conference, hosts crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University next weekend in its home finale at Edwards Field with games at 4 and 6 p.m. Friday, and noon Saturday.
